The University of Mindanao Chorale (UMC), founded in 1993, is the university’s official choral group, dedicated to showcasing the vibrant culture of Mindanao and the Philippines through choral music. Under the leadership of conductor Timothy Paul Atencio since 2018, UMC has garnered prestigious awards both nationally and internationally, consistently setting high standards in choral artistry. Their accolades include two awards at the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2009 and 2015, becoming the first Filipino choir to win the Grand Prix and multiple Gold Awards at the 9th Oriental Concentus in Singapore (2016), and achieving the Grand Prix and two Gold Awards at the 13th Busan Choral Festival & Competitions (2017). They were Grand Prix Finalists at the 1st Tokyo International Choir Competitions (2018) and performed as the Official Guest Choir at the Taipei International Choral Festival in 2022.

In recent years, UMC won the Mixed Choir Category and Best Interpretation of the Contest Piece at the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival (2023) and secured the Mixed Choir Category Winner and Best Interpretation of the Contest Piece at the Himig Handog

International Choral Grand Prix (2024). UMC also served as an Official Guest Choir in the IntenSIXTY: The Philippine Madrigal Singers' 60th Anniversary Celebration (2024). As of 2025,

UMC is honored to represent the Philippines in both the Asia Choral Grand Prix and the World Choral Championship. Other recognitions include the Ani ng Dangal Award and the Dangal ng Lahi Award, acknowledging their contributions to Filipino arts and culture.

With each performance, UMC upholds a commitment to musical excellence and proudly represents Filipino artistry on the world stage.

Conductor

Timothy Paul Atencio

Mr. Timothy Paul Atencio joined the University of Mindanao Chorale in 2013. Starting as amember, he quickly displayed his passion and leadership in choral music, serving as assistantconductor from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, he was appointed as UMC's official conductor, where he has since nurtured and developed the ensemble’s talents, guiding them to multiple prestigious awards and international acclaim.

Mr. Atencio’s dedication to choral music extends beyond UMC. Since 2016, he has been an active member of the Philippine Choral Directors Association. He joined the Sing Philippines Youth Choir in 2018 under the mentorship of Mr. Mark Anthony Carpio. Most recently, he performed with the choir in the 2024 Tolosa International Choir Competition under Mr. Carpio’s baton. During the choir’s concert series in Europe, Mr. Atencio took on the role of stand-in conductor for one of the performances on their journey home. His expertise and commitment to

choral music continue to uplift UMC and highlight Filipino choral artistry on the global stage.
